The housing isn't important.It just helps things be neat and clean.If you want,You could just surround your laser diode with newspaper.Those diodes are SEN-SA-TIVE!So be careful what you use as filler.(Newspaper was an example; that would be a very bad choice.)

Nope,Any little junk store might have one.Electronic stores are almost guaranteed to have them cheep.Just don't buy a new one and you should be good.
